We want old library – residents Halswell Residents Association’s ideas for the old library • A youth facility, leadership, or drop-in centre. • A local museum showcasing local history. • A police station. • A funeral chapel. • A legal or accounting business. Have your say What should be done with the old Halswell Library? Email your suggestions to andrew. king@starmedia.kiwi IS IT NEEDED: The old Halswell Library will close on October 28 and could become a community space. A soon to be disused library could be turned into a play centre, a funeral chapel or even a police station as community leaders mull over what to do with the space. The old Halswell Library will close on October 28. The new library will be at the Te Hapua Halswell Centre, on

INSIDE:

Halswell Rd, and will also have a community facility and pool. But community leaders do not want the building to fall into disrepair, instead opting to look for possible uses for the building on the corner of Sparks and Halswell Rds. The Halswell Residents Association has come up with a list of uses that includes a funeral chapel and a police

station. Chairman Ron Fensom said the facility would be well used in the community. Since the earthquakes, community facilities have been scarce. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board member Debbie Mora said the city council would have to be asked if it would consider handing the

building over to the community. Mr Fensom said the options had come from a survey the association did and wanted the community to come up with their own suggestions. The community board would lead the process for the consultation. He said the association did not want any more bars or restaurants in the area.

“We have enough of those as it is, he said. The community board plans to start a formal process of consultation to gauge what the public want to be done with the site. “We are certain that the space would be well used by the community and hope the city council will listen to the residents’ ideas.

The board received a deputation from a Hoon Hay resident outlining concerns with the proposal to separate the suburbs. In the current proposal Hoon Hay is part of the Spreydon ward, and Hillmorton is part of the Halswell ward. Submissions on the review close on October 9. $9200 FOR SCHOOL CLASS Children from Tawa Class at Gilberthorpe School received a cheque for $9200 from the staff at Bidvest. This money will be used to help provide the Kiwi Can classes in four Hornby schools. It will mean almost 1800 children will be supported with this life skills and values programme. Bidvest is a major supplier to the restaurant industry and annually gives funds to support the Foundation for Youth Development programmes Kiwi Can, Stars and Project K.

NEW START: MP Nicky Wagner turns the first sod at Avonhead School as part of its $5.3 million redevelopment.

$5.3m school upgrade starts A new teaching block, plus four new teachers are planned in a $5.3m redevelopment of Avonhead School. On Friday, the first sod was turned at the the site by Christchurch MP Nicky Wagner. The new development will

have enough space to add another 100 students to the roll, plus also upgrade existing buildings. The plan is to have construction completed by February 2017. The school will continue to operate during

that time. “As with all major school redevelopments, the classrooms of yesterday are being replaced with innovative new learning spaces. These are open and flexible environments in which children will be inspired to learn

We ask National MPs how the Government has fared a year after being elected Gerry Brownlee, MP for Ilam Since September 20, 2014 and the installation of the third John Key led-Government of which I’m proud to be a minister, the electorate office has continued to be a busy place. Issues affecting constituents in their engagement with Government agencies and departments can often be helped along with a visit to the office. Education institutions in the Ilam electorate are not only large employers, but are also known for the quality of their teaching. While several schools suffered severe earthquake damage and have been operating in constrained circumstances, rebuild plans at Christchurch Boys’ High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, Burnside Primary School and Cobham Intermediate are under way or have been completed in the last 12 months.

I’m grateful to the boards of trustees for their hard work to get the best for students now and in the future. Another important education issue in Ilam has been the decline in foreign fee paying students; an important source of additional funds that enable extra resources for the whole school community. I’ve been working with Minister of Education Hekia Parata to see what can be done to get through this lean time. City council is currently proposing a new city plan and I’ve been receiving and reviewing both submissions and decisions, particularly relating to the Avonhead part of the electorate. For Ilam constituents and residents, having good civic facilities in the city are important contributors to enjoyment of life here in Christchurch. I have recently gained Cabinet approval for the Metro Sports Facility which will be a great asset for the entire city. Other anchor projects are progressing well and I’m putting a lot of time into the Convention Centre project and

SOAP BOX the Performing Arts Precinct. Beyond April 18, 2016, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act will cease to exist. Regeneration will be the focus of new arrangements and I’ve been working closely with the mayor on a new law to see Government and city council work closely together to progressively pass governance and management of the rebuild to the Canterbury community.

The intersection of Straven Rd and Riccarton Rd was targeted in a two-week police operation clamping down on distracted drivers. About 300 fines were issued by police, 174 for cellphone use. The rest related to red light running, seat belts and licence offences. What is the solution to stop people using their cellphones while driving?

Supermarket creates 100 jobs Residents in Wigram Skies will not have to go far to get their groceries when a new supermarket opens. The opening of Wigram New World supermarket is part of the first stage of the Ngai Tahu Property development called The Landing. A family-owned and operated New World supermarket will open at 9am on Wednesday. Owners James and Karen Backhouse were the former owners of New World Northside in Oamaru and Four Square in Wanaka. “We absolutely love supermarkets, having worked in the business throughout the South Island together for over eight years,” Mr Backhouse said. “We’re really passionate about providing fresh produce and quality products to our customers – that’s really important to us. “My Cantabrian wife Karen grew up in Darfield, so we’re looking forward to putting down our family roots and have our two children grow up in the wonderful Wigram

community.” General manager for property and retail development of Foodstuffs South Island Roger Davidson said that the latest 2600m² supermarket will create more than 100 new jobs in the community. “New World Wigram has many environmentallyfriendly features, such as LED lighting, CO² refrigeration, natural light panels in the ceiling and Foodstuff’s new recyclable plastic meat trays in the butchery,” he said. “We’re proud of our commitment to reducing our stores’ carbon footprint, and this has been considered since the initial design process.” Mr Backhouse said customer service was his top priority as they browse the aisles. That includes placing items in logical areas, doubleheight ceilings to enhance the sense of space, to a barista in the entrance way, enabling shoppers to enjoy a hot coffee as they browse the aisles.

Vince Binding

our PEOPLE

Football lover devoted to Vince Binding has just brought up 30 years in the Air Force but his real passion in life is football. Reporter Andrew King spoke to him about playing, captaining and coaching football teams Hi Vince you have been coaching the Halswell United women’s team for two years now, how has that been? It’s been good. It started off rough a year or so ago when it came to numbers but it has increased. We now have 16 in the Premier Development League squad, 15 in the division 1 Sunday league, 14 in division 3. What made you get into coaching? The club asked me. I have been coaching football nearing on 20 years. I’m a football lover. I was born in the United Kingdom and moved over here when I was 16. I am a qualified referee and started officiating when I got here. I played a bit in Auckland as well as coaching. I coached Three Kings United Football Club, Eastern Suburbs

AFC and I was the first coach of Marlborough Marist. I really enjoyed coaching the Air Force men’s and women’s, and NZ Defence Force men’s and women’s teams. Was there a numbers problem when you first got involved with Halswell? They had lost a few players from the season before and wanted to rebuild so they rang me up and we had a chat. I asked what they wanted to achieve and made a plan for how we would do it. How did you turn that around? We started to rebuild by making women’s football attractive for the younger players. A lot of it was wordof-mouth with players that had stayed on, they liked what we were doing. It was about reestablishing the team culture. I

said I would initially work with them [Halswell United] for three years. We are still struggling for numbers in some of the younger grades so we will have to find a way to encourage more girls to move into football. You have a hand in not just one team, is that right? I am basically co-ordinating the three women’s teams there at the moment. I run a combined training then focus on the PDL games Saturday morning. We

train Tuesdays and Thursdays and are always working on building the team culture. Is it hard to manage more than one? Because we have them all training mainly on the one night it is easy to get across all the coaches. The teams look after themselves on game day. I have a fantastic assistant coach who came on this year, Paddy Stephens. And Trudi Squire she is the game day manager

for division 1. Katie Pottinger is the glue that keeps us all together. Trudi and Potty are club stalwarts. We couldn’t have achieved what we have without them. They are all doing well, what’s the secret? I’m not sure if there is a secret, it is about a team building a winning culture. Also the team culture, if the team culture is strong then the rest takes care of itself.

the game What do you do outside of coaching? My job with the Air Force. I’m with the youth development group out in Burnham. We work with Work and Income, Blue Light, Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Education. Some of the kids I work with are youth at risk but most of them just don’t have opportunities to build confidence or respect. That’s what I try to do, hopefully that will give them the skills to succeed and be better people. I have been in the Air Force for 30 years now. The high point for me is being able to represent the Air Force, playing 43 games for them, over half of those I was captain, same with the New Zealand Defence Force. Then coaching them. How long have you been working with kids for? I’ve been working with the age group of 14 to 25-year-olds for around 16 years. My job helps me with my coaching and vice versa. Coaching, role modelling and mentoring is what I love to do. How do you find the time for both? In the Air Force they teach

Moving on, is coaching something that you would like to do full time? I will continue coaching. I love the game and working with the younger kids, teaching them the values of playing team sports. There is a saying that gets around that goes: A kid in sport stays out of courts. Do you have other hobbies? Is watching football on TV a hobby? Football takes up a lot of my time, I have a very understanding wife.

Why Build??

real Kiwi bakery” is how Ruth Buckley describes her business, Halswell Bakery, which is located in the new block of shops at the New World Shopping Centre at 346 Halswell Road. “We have a full range of traditional bakery products – bread, buns, pies, filled rolls, sandwiches, cakes, slices and biscuits, and everything is baked with love, right here in our store.” While the Halswell Bakery has only been operating for a year and a half, Ruth and husband Peter have more than 25 years’ experience in the baking industry and have a good understanding of what their customers like, including catering for events.. “Club sandwiches, savouries, scones, muffins and slices are popular choices for functions such as work shouts, 21st birthday parties, engagement parties and anniversaries, but we’re actually able to make anything to the customers’ requirements – just ask,” says Ruth. Among the range of tasty items available, the Halswell Bakery pies are “shaping up to become pretty famous”, she says, with good feedback on them coming from satisfied customers. “Of our 14 varieties of pie, the steak are the most popular. These include steak and cheese, pepper steak, steak cheese and bacon, and steak and mushroom. Our steak pies are full of tender, slow-cooked beef sourced from our local butcher, with a rich, flavorsome gravy, and soft flakey pastry,” Ruth says. “I don’t think you can beat a pie that has been hand crafted, just a few metres away from the counter you’re buying it from.”

“I don’t think you can beat a pie that has been hand crafted, just a few metres away from the counter you’re buying it from.” Chicken cranberry and brie is another flavour that many customers rave about. Family size meat pies are also available. Hot and cold drinks are offered, with Three Llamas coffee from Peru being the bakery’s chosen brand. “We have several experienced baristas on our staff so customers can be assured they will get a great coffee every time. We also have juices, soft drinks and water, and we’re about to introduce a range of smoothies for the summer months. “We have a really great team who are fun, fast and friendly and enjoy a bit of banter with our regular customers.” Seating is available inside and out. Halswell Bakery is open seven days a week – 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 6am to 5.30pm Saturday and 7am to 5pm Sunday. Phone 322 4600. “Like us on Facebook to see what’s baking and what the hard case team are up to.”

Summer’s on the way, Get Walking

If the shoe fits

With the warmer temperatures and the general improvement in the weather, now is a great time to dust off those walking shoes.

I

ncreasingly the health benefits of active commuting and using public transport are being recognised and are well researched. This is a way to combat poor health and prevent a polluted environment. For every 1200 steps or 12 minutes walking (about 1 kilometre) you burn calories, improve your health and happiness, and reduce your disease risk;1300 steps save 72 cents on car costs, and avoid 0.2kgs of carbon emission. People who commute by bus or train and ferry, get on average over three times the exercise of those in a car. And bus and trains are the safest way to get around.

The question is if it’s so great why aren’t more people walking and using public transport? Living Streets president, Andy Smith says “Walking is part of every trip but we want people to walk more. We do see more people walk and use public transport in some places but our cities have been developed for the car. This makes it difficult to get the exercise we need every day – recommended 30 minutes activity most days for adults, and more for children and teenagers. We think it should be easy to walk or use public transport to where you want to go every day – save the car for out of the ordinary trips.

Speech earns silver

A Rangi Ruru student has been awarded second place in the Lois Middlemiss Memorial Awards. Aidanfield resident Amy Huang wrote her ‘tongue-incheek’ address about what she would do if she was elected prime minister called Speech of the Female Candidate. The award is an annual competition for poetry, and winners were named on NZ Women’s Suffrage Day at the Kate Sheppard Memorial on Oxford Tce. Award convener Judith Sutherland of the Christchurch Branch of the National Council of Women, said the aim of the award is to encourage secondary school girls to gain a better understanding of women’s issues. “We want young women to take a topic and explore it from a personal perspective,” she said. Aranui High School student Bethany Walters won with her speech I Would Never Do This To You. Both students, and around 20 people including Mayor Lianne Dalziel and city councillors Ali Jones and Pauline Cotter, gathered at the Kate Sheppard Memorial to acknowledge the 122nd anniversary of New Zealand women gaining the vote. It is known as Women’s Suffrage Day.

ocated in the heart of this popular suburb, this has been my client’s family home for many years, but the decision has been made to downsize and the new house has been purchased so this home has to be sold! Beautifully presented and with many of the character features carefully retained, this is a home that is just waiting for a new family to cherish and enjoy. Two large living rooms, a separate dining plus spacious kitchen create ideal spaces for you to fill with friends and family. The family living room and kitchen all open onto a large deck, perfectly positioned to enjoy the sunny days. A large master bedroom and three further bedrooms provide enough room to have extra people to stay, while the sunny backyard will be a bonus for the summer months to come. Your cars haven’t been forgotten either with a good double garage to tuck them away safely at night. Open homes: Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 2.30pm to 3pm, or to arrange a private viewing of this property, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) now on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.
